The challenge

Conceptualize and design an innovative solar energy sales service for non-interconnected zones (NIZ), enabling EPM to sustainably expand its energy coverage, meet regulatory requirements, and generate value for both the company and rural communities.

Proposed Objectives

Create a solar energy sales service model that is adaptable to the needs of non-interconnected areas.

Ensure that all legal and regulatory aspects are covered, guaranteeing the service’s viability within the regulatory framework.

Develop and validate service prototypes to ensure functionality and acceptance by end users.

Offer a service that not only provides energy but also improves the quality of life for rural communities.

Design a model that is sustainable in the long term and scalable to other regions with similar characteristics.

Activities conducted during the project

Documentation of solar energy service processes and competitive analysis to identify best practices.

Validation of opportunities in non-interconnected areas, considering risks and benefits.

Design and validation of interactions to ensure a satisfactory experience for users.

Assessment of legal requirements necessary for the implementation of the service.

Development of a pilot project in Zaragoza, Antioquia, using Kingo technology.

Measurement of the economic, social, and environmental benefits of the project for the involved communities.

Results obtained

  1. The pilot project in Zaragoza, Antioquia, was successful from the perspective of the service as a prepaid model under a postpaid technology (availability and access to energy), demonstrating the technical and social viability of the solar energy sales service.
  2. All legal and regulatory requirements were met, ensuring the service’s compliance.
  3. Participating families reported a significant improvement in their quality of life due to access to reliable solar energy.
  4. A service model was developed that can be replicated in other non-interconnected areas (ZNI), promoting the project’s expansion to other regions of the country where the EPM group operates.
