Eco-design is an innovative methodology that integrates ecological principles into every phase of a product’s lifecycle. From selecting sustainable raw materials to production, distribution, and recycling processes, its goal is to reduce the use of non-renewable resources and minimize waste generation. But did you know that eco-design doesn’t just benefit the environment? It can also positively transform the customer experience.
When discussing sustainable design, the focus is often on its environmental impact: reducing carbon emissions, minimizing waste, and mitigating the climate crisis. However, little is said about how this practice, combined with the circular economy, can improve consumer satisfaction and loyalty. In fact, there’s a widespread belief that the conveniences customers demand are at odds with sustainability. But is this really the case?
Let’s take the example of supermarket bags. A few years ago, the transition from disposable plastic bags to reusable or paper bags faced some resistance. Some customers perceived this change as a loss of convenience, as they now had to remember to bring their own bags or pay for them. However, this practice has profoundly changed the relationship between consumers and brands.
Today, as a customer, I have a more meaningful connection with those reusable bags. They’re no longer disposable items that end up in the trash but functional elements that accompany my daily life for months. They also become a constant presence of the brand in my home, reinforcing its identity and values. A standout example is IKEA’s iconic blue bag, which the brand actively promotes for its multiple uses on its website. Even the renowned fashion house Balenciaga paid homage to it with a luxury version.
How Eco-Design Transforms Customer Experience
Eco-design not only reinforces a brand’s sustainable values but also enhances consumer perception and satisfaction. Recent studies by firms like Statista, Bain & Company, Accenture, and PwC reveal that between 50% and 75% of consumers prefer to buy from brands that demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability. But the benefits go further.
Eco-design and the circular economy focus on maximizing value rather than volume. In other words, it’s not about selling more products but offering solutions that create a positive impact for both the environment and customers. A notable example is Decathlon, the international sports retailer, which has implemented circular business models such as second-hand sales, rentals, repairs, and recycling programs.
According to Laurence Fontinoy, Decathlon’s Circularity Director, “the most polluting product is the one that isn’t used.” For instance, a camping tent bought for a single use and then stored indefinitely has a much greater environmental impact than a rented tent. Additionally, this approach represents significant savings for customers, both in costs and storage space.
Lasting Connections: The Case of Sustainable Fashion
In a recent project with a Colombian fashion company, we collaborated on developing a repair service for leather bags, straps, and footwear. These repairs not only extend the products’ lifespan, reducing the need for disposal and replacement, but also strengthen the relationship between the brand and its customers.
Consumers can continue using products they cherish for years, creating a deeper emotional bond with the brand. After all, as the saying goes, true love takes time.
Rethinking Eco-Design: More Than an Environmental Strategy
Sustainable design and the circular economy shouldn’t be seen solely as tools to mitigate environmental damage. Above all, they are opportunities to connect with customer values, improve their experience, and foster brand loyalty.
We invite companies to rethink eco-design not just as an ecological practice but as a comprehensive strategy to strengthen relationships with consumers. By aligning sustainability values with customer needs and expectations, brands can create authentic and lasting connections.
